Craig thought about the email that Kelsey had sent him last night. It had been more than two months since he’d communicated with her. Two months of soul-searching and one really weird encounter with a lonely housewife playing at being a dominatrix. What did she want? Was it just to put the past behind them?

Kelsey had asked if she could Skype with him today after work. Skype was a new video chat service that everyone was using. He’d learned that a lot of girls on the dating sites wanted to do video chats to see if you were a psychopath, so he’d planned on downloading the software anyway and began the arduous task of downloading a program over dial-up. After the download started, he drove to Radio Shack and bought a camera to mount to the top of his computer monitor.

With those two tasks done, he sat in front of his computer, wondering what she wanted to talk about. There had been a few half-hearted replies to her emails after he told her exactly why he was being kicked out of country, but nothing of substance. Then, around Valentine’s Day, he’d simply stopped responding to her messages at all. It hadn’t really been on purpose, it’s just what happened. Absence had not made his heart grow fonder it seemed.

When his monitor began to chime at 7pm, he wasn’t entirely sure what to do. He hadn’t ever video chatted with anyone before. He finally found the little telephone button and clicked on it with his mouse. Then, she was there, right in front of him.

Kelsey’s face filled the screen, her dark hair almost out of view around the edges. “Oh, geez,” she said, laughing. He’d missed her laugh. It was so light-hearted and genuine that it was impossible not to smile along with her. “Hold on.”

She adjusted something and the camera view zoomed out so he could see her hair, which was down and appeared to be styled instead of pulled back in a bun or wet from just being washed. She wore a little bit of makeup, some eye shadow and lipstick. Behind her, a group of kitchen cabinets lined a wall decorated with wallpaper above and below them.

“There, that’s better,” she laughed. She took a deep breath and then said, “Hi.”

“Hey, Kelsey. It’s been a long time.” That was lame, he chastised himself.

“Yeah. A couple of months.”

“You… You look good. I like your hair.”

Her hand went up to her black locks. “Really? Thanks. I tried something different with it.”

“It suits you.”

She pointed at the camera. “Your hair is longer. Are you growing it out?”

“Ah, no? I don’t know. Just been busy here.”

A shadow loomed over, partially blocking some of the light. “Oh, he’s cute!” a woman said.

“Mom! Oh my God. Please!” Kelsey groaned, pushing at the unseen woman.

“I just wanted to see this guy you told me about.”

Kelsey reddened noticeably, even with the poor video quality. “Please, Mom. You’re embarrassing me.”

“Oh, stop it. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” the woman said, her face coming into view.
